The PEN of disaster

Posted in Author, Book, Creative, Creative Writing, Memoir, Novel, People, Reading, Uncategorized, writer, Writing, Writing Experiences on November 30, 2015 by A. J. Lee

I have been absent from my regular blogging for a few months.  The reason.  I blame a PEN.   It fell from my desk and rolled a distance under.  I reached and stretched to retrieve it.  This caused a slipped disc.  Very painful indeed.   Oh… but.. that’s not the end.  Not being able to sit at my desk top and type I’ve hand written  a lot of the work of my second book.    I thought I’d try and update my manuscript.  Then update my blog.  I stood from a chair my left leg gave way (numbness in my left leg due to the slipped disc)  I crashed to the floor hitting my back on a small table, cut my arm on a ring binder, twisted my left foot.  I thought I’d broken my  toes.  Fortunately is badly bruised not broken   My foot and toes are still black, swollen and painful.. a walking stick now an aid to walking.  I’ll be happy when I don’t need that any more.

I hope that very soon I’ll be b logging regular again.   THE PEN has a lot to answer too.  My second book in progress will always have the tag THE PEN of disaster.

Take care all… be careful how you  pick things up from the floor.

Happy writing

AJ 🙂

Do you  get the same thing happen to you?.  You  have a a really good day  of writing.  Your mind seems to have gone into over drive.  You  want to get everything written.   Time to  stop writing.  Have a meal. Relax after a refreshing shower.  Now it’s time to go to bed.   But no you  can’t sleep.  Ideas still calling at you.   I decided to  take a break and blog.   Now back  to  writing.  Maybe I can sleep later.

Happy  writing to you all

I didn’t reach the 50,000 words in July.  But the good news is.  I am now well on my  way with  my second book.  I have hand written a great deal but  not typed it to the manuscript.

Write every day, even if only a short paragraph, jot  down  any  ideas, or thoughts that come to mind.

New writers, Make a character profile. Name, Age,  Appearance, including any scars, tattoos.

What habits does he or she have? ( does he/ she bite her nails ,has a nervous cough etc.)   Single, Married, Children, Bring the character to life.

Happy Writing,

AJ 🙂

Yes, it’s 4.30 am. My mind wouldn’t rest.  I have to get up, make a cup of tea.  Maybe then I can try and sleep again.  I have my drink, climb back into bed.  It’s no good,  I still can’t get to sleep. Now 6.00 am.  I again get out of bed.  Put the kettle on for another cup of tea.  I have to write, get the  those ideas keeping me awake on paper.   I’d better set about it now.  Write, write, such is the life of a writer.  Sleep…later.

Happy writing,

A.J. 🙂

NEW WRITERS, WHEN WRITING YOUR NOVEL…DO YOU USE THE SAME WORD FOR EMOTIONS / EXPRESSIONS TOO MANY TIMES?

Posted in Author, Book, Creative, Creative Writing, Inspiration, Memoir, Novel, writer, Writing, Writing Experiences with tags , , , , , , , , , , on July 7, 2015 by A. J. Lee

You’ve written your chapter or a large amount of your Novel, then having read through it. You see that you’ve used the same word too many times? Emotions/Expressions. I know  how frustrating that  can be.  On the first draft of my book,  I used the words ANGRY,FRIGHTENED , and PLEASED to name a few, too many times.  I had to change them, making sure the altered words were appropriate.

Now when I handwrite, I underline the word I want to check for similar actions, if typing I add an extra letter at the end of the word, so that it’s then highlighted.  I can check the word once I have completed my chapter. The underlines bring it  back to your attention. If it looks right just correct the spelling.

When reading through your manuscript, you can become word blind. Especially if you read it immediately after a writing session.  Leave that piece of writing  for a day or two then read it  through again with a fresh mind.

Use a Thesaurus for the words you wish to change. List them, tick them when used.

The word ANGRY, you can also use some of the following:- annoyed, heated, raging, furious, fuming, enraged, pushed to far, infuriated, livid, upset, mad.

FRIGHTENED :- afraid, alarmed, anxious, concerned, confused, distressed, fearful, mortified, puzzled, scared, shaken, terrified, uneasy, worried stiff.

PLEASED :- happy, satisfied, content, cheerful, delighted, hearty, at pease, cheerful, content, glad, thankful, satisfied, excited, overjoyed, elated, joyous, thrilled.

This is how I polish up my manuscripts.  I hope it is of help.

Happy writing,

AJ 🙂

1st. of June. Ready, get set GO. Can you write 50,000 words this month? Of course you can.

Okay, its the first of June.  You have your ideas for your novel.  It’s there.  You’ve been thinking about it for a while.   You have your characters,  you may have even made your notes.   You have your characters. You have your plot. Your genre.

So come on get it started.   Then go  with  the flow.  Write…write. See if you can get to the 50,000 words in a month.  If you don’t.  You will have a chunk of your novel done.  You  will feel motivated to continue.  You get your First draft completed.

I’d love to know how you progress.

Maybe one day a sentence, the next a paragraph.  Then you  can’t stop.   It’s going well.

I’d love to know how you progress.

Happy writing,

AJ 🙂
